FLEXspace FREEZE Coming November 13!

FLEXspace is Getting a Facelift!

You spoke, we listened. An extensive effort is underway to redesign FLEXspace to be mobile, “user-friendly” and infused with new features to better serve the academic community. The “FLEXspace 2.0” prototype was unveiled this summer at the UBTech Conference to rave reviews! Please stop by our poster presentation at EDUCAUSE to get a hands-on demo of the new prototype!

We will FREEZE the FLEXspace Uploading Side of Things November 13th

In order to transition content to FLEXspace 2.0, we need to “freeze” the upload side of FLEXspace on Monday, Nov. 13th to create a clean data set to migrate to the new, custom platform.  This includes suspension of record editing and new account creation.

Have you been meaning to upload and showcase your latest and greatest learning spaces to the collection? Don’t delay – you can still upload new spaces until the freeze date.

And after the freeze date, as a registered FLEXspace user, you will still be able to view, browse and search the collection, create ‘image groups’ and tag your favorite spaces.

FLEXspace.org will share regular status updates – so please subscribe to the blog be notified as we move through this exciting growth process!

Women in STEM – How Learning Spaces Contribute!

@UBWISC

@UBWISC

The Next 10 Years: Helping STEM Students Thrive

The UB Women in STEM Cooperative is proud to debut the The Next 10 Years: Helping STEM Students Thrive series, an original online collaboration between Cornell University and the University at Buffalo featuring the perspectives of national thought leaders and institutional representatives about expanding the participation of women in undergraduate STEM education at different scales as informed through the lens of higher education trends, institutional practices, learning spaces and introductory undergraduate courses in STEM.

This interactive, online series will feature a different topic per month. Each session will kick off with a topic introduction by our distinguished thought leaders to be followed by institutional representatives from Cornell University and the University at Buffalo who will share insights from their respective campuses. Audience participants will also be able to join the conversation, ask your questions, share your experiences, build your networks, and learn more about effective evidence-based teaching practices.

On January 10, 2018, FLEXspace’s very own Lisa Stephens, PhD, Office of the SUNY Provost, will be on a panel discussing how Learning Spaces contribute.

Webinar: Strategies for Scaling Active Learning Classrooms Across Campus

Check out this upcoming webinar, presented by our very own FLEXspace core team member, Mark McCallister, hosted by Academic Impressions.

Strategies for Scaling Active Learning Classrooms Across Campus

May 31, 2017 | 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT

Learn strategies for bringing active learning opportunities to your entire campus.

Many institutions create a few “showcase” active learning spaces rather than incorporating active learning elements throughout all classrooms on campus. Learn how to pursue a scalable model for creating active learning spaces across your campus. This training will focus on how you can:

  • Improve your physical space with active learning components
  • Gain buy-in from faculty for a pedagogy shift
  • Save time and money to create spaces that enhance student learning

This training will feature examples from the University of Florida to help you see the concepts discussed.

Mark McCallister

Associate Director of the Office of Academic Technology
University of Florida

Mark McCallister is Associate Director of the Office of Academic Technology at the University of Florida. Areas under his supervision include classroom technology support, video & collaboration services, A/V installation services, learning space design, computer labs & classrooms, optical mark recognition scanning and scoring, support of workstation hardware and software, and software application & desktop virtualization. Learning Spaces Collaboratory FREE Webinars Start Next Week!

LSCThe upcoming LSC webinar is titled “Strategies for Catalyzing Campus-wide Attention to the Future of Learning Spaces.”

“After participating in the LSC Roundtable at Loyola University, Dean Pamela Scott-Johnson and Professor Carlos Gutierrez explored with their colleagues at California State University Los Angeles the idea of bringing a roundtable to their campus. 20 academics joined five architects in the four-hour discussion, beginning with individual questions and concluding with a short list of questions and ideas to pursue in coming months. This was a roundtable assembled with no major campus facilities projects in the future; it ended with some ambitious ideas about the campus as an ecosystem for learning that capitalized on existing assets – particularly their students, faculty, and urban setting.”
