Horizon Report 2017 – Rethinking Library Spaces

According to the latest Horizon Report: Library Edition 2017:

“The transformation of physical spaces is an ongoing trend within higher education. Listed as a long-term trend in the NMC Horizon Report > 2015 Library Edition, the 2017 expert panelists believe that the reconceptualization of library spaces is maturing. Recent studies are helping to highlight the ways in which these changes are occurring. The report Planning and Designing Academic Library Spaces, for example, identified the approaches, challenges, and best practices in designing new academic library learning spaces. Through a series of interviews, the authors found that 77% of architects and 50% of librarians prioritized flexibility, favoring spaces that are movable and customizable based. Supporting a spectrum of learning needs was another shared goal. Most interviewees noted that new library spaces were being designed to support academic learning activities, with collaboration at 83%, individual study at 73%, and point-of-need services at 63%.” (see original report here by Project Information Literacy.)

Coalition for Networked Information Introduction and Program Plan 2016-17 go.nmc.org/cnipro (Consortium of Networked Information, accessed 20 February 2017.) CNI has produced a program plan that has three major features, including transforming organizations, professions, and individuals, under which spaces and services that support technology-enhanced research and learning reside.

Evaluating and Designing Learning Spaces Guide go.nmc.org/jisceval (Jisc, accessed 20 February 2017.) Jisc’s website provides a quick guide to the evaluation and design of learning spaces, covering assessment methods, project management, and the design process.

Imagine Our Library go.nmc.org/ucdlib (UC Davis University Library, accessed 20 February 2017.) The UC Davis Library is soliciting suggestions from students, faculty, and researchers about how the library’s space, technology, and services can best serve their needs. Phase one involves visioning, phase two focuses on detailed programming, and phase three is the actual design.

Learning Spaces Collaboratory go.nmc.org/lsc (Learning Spaces Collaboratory, accessed 20 February 2017.) The Learning Spaces Collaboratory is synthesizing findings from research and practice in learning space design to build resources to shape and assess undergraduate learning environments, such as an “Emerging Template for Assessing Learning Spaces.”

Library Refurbishments go.nmc.org/refurbish (The University of Western Australia Library, accessed 20 February 2017.) The University of Western Australia libraries are transforming to provide more interactive, flexible, and collaborative spaces. Once home to print collections, the Medical and Dental Library will be renovated with e-learning suites, computer training facilities, and collaborative learning areas.

Measure the Future go.nmc.org/measure (Measure the Future, accessed 20 February 2017.) Using inexpensive sensors that collect data about a building’s usage, the Measure the Future project will help libraries track the number of visits, items patrons browsed, and which parts of the library were busy during specific times. The strategic role of education in bringing IIoT solutions to fruition cannot be understated. How students learn will greatly be impacted by IIoT as more connected classrooms come online and more connected devices enable students to interact with content more immersively, untethered from text books. Not only will IIoT have a transformative effect on education, education will play an important role in delivering IIoT. Countries will need to double down on their investment in STEM education to both drive IIoT innovation and reap the most benefit from it. Today, this dependency is evident in the U.S., where many openings for high-paying manufacturing jobs remain unfilled because of the lack of qualified workers.

Across every national plan being developed, the potential of IIoT to drive efficiencies and stimulate economic development depends on cooperation. IIoT is not just a technology story. It is a story of wide-scale technology enablement driven by the mutual needs and investments of industry and society alike, a true collaboration between the private and public sectors.

Mark McCallister is Associate Director of the Office of Academic Technology at the University of Florida. Areas under his supervision include classroom technology support, video & collaboration services, A/V installation services, learning space design, computer labs & classrooms, optical mark recognition scanning and scoring, support of workstation hardware and software, and software application & desktop virtualization. He served as President of CCUMC: Leadership in Media & Academic Technology (http://www.ccumc.org) in 2010-2011, and in other roles on CCUMC’s Board of Directors from 2008-2012. Mark has presented on various topics at numerous CCUMC conferences, as well as ACM SIGUCCS, EduComm, the 2011 Standing Conference for Heads of Media Services conference in Newcastle, United Kingdom, and was an invited keynote speaker at the 2012 Learning Space Design Summit in Sydney, Australia. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration, and is currently working toward a Ph.D. in Educational Technology.

K-12 Schools Embrace Anytime, Anywhere Learning

Districts go beyond reconfiguring classrooms and prepare students to take their learning mobile.

The word classroom may conjure up a certain image: chalkboards, a large desk in the front of the room for the teacher and rows of individual desks.

Increasingly, though, schools are ditching the seating chart in those often claustrophobia-inducing rooms and embracing all parts of the building. Hallways, stairwells and other parts of the school now are becoming places to learn too.

Yorkville Community School District 115 in Illinois has spent nearly three years planning and executing a major renovation and expansion of its high school building.

While the impetus was overcrowding — small classrooms, tight hallways, a dark library that had low ceilings and a lack of dedicated athletic spaces — Yorkville did more than just add room, says Technology Director Ryan Adkins.

“The whole goal was to make every space in our building a learning space, whether it was a hallway, a classroom or the locker bays,” he says.

Yorkville’s classrooms now are filled with rolling chairs, maneuverable student desks and the most up-to-date technology, allowing teachers to continuously redesign their classroom space for all types of student ­collaborations and interactive lessons. And when students aren’t in class, they’re still ­collaborating all over the school, including in newly renovated common spaces.

“It’s kind of that college feel,” Adkins says.

  • Who is eligible? There may be an unlimited number of individual FLEXspace contributors from the same institution. Upload/complete more than one learning space and increase your chances! In the event that two winners from the same institution are selected at random, the first name drawn will receive the prize – eligibility is limited to one per institution.
  • What counts as a learning space? Any physical campus space used for formal or informal learning – active learning classrooms, lecture halls, makerspaces, group work and brainstorming areas, learning commons, huddle spaces, living-learning spaces, and any learning spaces to proudly share with the world.  You may also upload a ‘before’ image of space scheduled for refurbish/remodel to later add “after” images.
  • *What counts as a complete record?  NOTE: we’ll accept a record with simply a contact email, campus, and room name! And remember to click to “publish” your record(s).
    • (Previous guidelines: It’s ok to provide partial information, but please provide as many details as possible – and use the comments field to provide helpful ‘backstory.’ NOTE: multiple “records” (e.g., multiple photos) associated with one learning space are welcome by copying data to all associated records (see “How to Copy from Master Record’ and other ‘How To’ tips).)

DEADLINE: All qualifying FLEXspace records that are completed and published (newly uploaded or updated), by April 18th are eligible for the drawing.
